How to Plan for Photos with Kids Who Love to Move
Prepping the kids for pictures doesn’t have to be stressful, in fact if you lean in to the fun, you will create portraits that speak volumes to your families love. I’m going to let you in on a secret… Even the Photographer’s Kid never sits still. Shocked?
The key is embracing their energy and letting yourself play, too.
Here’s how to set your family up for a fun, and successful, photoshoot!!
1. Choose the Right Time
Timing is everything when it comes to kids, especially 8 and under!
Try to schedule your session at a time when your child is typically well-rested and fed!! If they’re at their best in the morning, opt for an early session.
If they thrive in the late afternoon, a golden hour session might be perfect. Avoid times that overlap with nap schedules to prevent major meltdowns.
P.S. Kids cry! It’s okay if it happens during your session :) Don’t stress, just take a snack or play break. Focus on them. The art will be made during those moments, too. Experienced Photographers find the beauty.
2. Dress for Comfort and Movement
Choose outfits that allow your kids to move freely.
Soft fabrics, breathable materials, and well-fitted clothes will help them feel comfortable. Avoid anything too restrictive or itchy, as discomfort can lead to fussy moods.
Layers are a great option in case the weather shifts and can easily be adjusted. Always pack an extra change of clothes for anyone 2 and under!
3. Let Them Be Themselves
The best photos come from genuine interactions - running, spinning, playing, and laughing. Instead of expecting your child to smile on command, embrace what they naturally want to do.
Your photographer will work with their energy rather than against it, to keep the kids entertained and excited to be taking photos. Besides, you avoid that awkward posing when you’re willing to have fun!!
4. Bring Snacks and Take Breaks
Having small, non-messy snacks on hand can be a lifesaver. Think bite-sized crackers, apple slices, or small cheese cubes. Avoid anything too sticky or colorful that might stain clothes. Also, be open to breaks - sometimes a quick snack or cuddle can reset the mood and bring fresh energy to the session.
5. Incorporate Play (Yeah, YOU TOO!)
Since movement is inevitable, make it part of the session!
Games like ring-around-the-rosy, races, and dancing can make for joyful, dynamic photos. Your photographer may encourage playful prompts like "run to Mom for a big hug" or "jump as high as you can!"
These activities help keep kids engaged while creating natural, heartfelt images. Don’t forget to do it with them :) Your kiddos will get a huge kick out of you being silly right along side them.
6. Delete Perfection!!
The best sessions happen when Parents go with the flow.
Instead of aiming for the perfect posed shot, let your hair down - We can find the art in whatever situation is happening in front of us. Their tiny hands wrapped around yours, or the way your hair catches the sunlight as you sit together, just snuggling.
There is magic in all of it.
So squeeze them tight, chase them, go down the slide, roll in the grass, splash the water, and lay in the sun. Leave your worries aside for just an hour. You won’t regret it 🖤
7. Bring a Comfort Item
If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or small blanket, bringing it along can offer comfort during the session. It can also be sweet to include in a few photos! These little keepsakes are often a big part of their childhood, why not let them be in their portraits? Stuffies, Books, Anything they love right now and can’t go a few hours without.
Details we will miss watching them carry around as their personalities and hobbies change and grow.
8. Trust Your Photographer
A Photographer experienced in working with children will know how to direct the session in a way that feels natural and stress-free. They’ll be ready for the wiggles, the unexpected turns, and the spontaneous bursts of joy. Trust them to guide the process, and focus on simply enjoying the time with your family.
Planning a family session with little ones doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. By embracing movement, keeping things playful, and going with the flow, you’ll create an experience that feels fun and effortless. The result? Beautiful, meaningful images that reflect your family and their love.
